It is extremely shocking to see the news reports about an impending deal between the military regime and the largest political party of Pakistan, which has suffered immensely at the hands of the present and the past military dictators. The timing of any such deal makes it even worse as it comes at a time when the regime seems to have finally entered the twilight zone. A popular movement in the country has crippled the regime and it is increasingly becoming dysfunctional. Why to breathe new life into a dying dictatorship?
The current movement spearheaded by the legal fraternity for the independence of judiciary is truly phenomenal. It could dynamically change the future of the people and the country. The civil society leadership should come forward and avail the opportunity. It should maximize efforts to end the military rule and provide a sustainable democratic alternate. They should not fritter away, undermine or sabotage the opportunity.

Defining Moment
MANY have said it is the defining moment in Pakistan. The heroic stance by the chief justice has galvanised civil society. He has rekindled a hope among the people and given them a feeling that they can finally defeat the dictatorship. He has inspired the people to think that they have a real chance now to end the military rule and bring in democracy in the country.
The lawyers and the journalists are in the vanguard. The common men and women are not far behind. Yes, this could very well be the defining moment and it calls upon all the citizens to stand up for their rights usurped for long by the dictators and the elite and the powerful sections of society. Such chances do not come our way too often. They are rare. Very few and far in between. People have to seize the moment.
The dictatorial regime is weak. It is nervous. It has blinked. And it is committing a blunder after a blunder. It would only be the fault of civil society and its leadership if the opportunity were lost.

Deal’ bitter pill for democracy, says Benazir

LONDON, April 25: Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto further fuelled speculations about an impending deal between her and President Gen Pervez Musharraf by agreeing to a suggestion that such a deal would adversely affect her credibility, but for her, she said, restoration of democracy in Pakistan and saving the country from falling into the hands of extremists was more important than her credibility.

Dear Aziz Narejo: If BB joins hands with the dictator and jumps on board a sinking ship she will endanger her own political future. If she has a grain of wisdom she must work hard for the aspirations of her own Sindhi people and join the ranks of other opposition forces to end the dictatorship.
ReplyDeleteAmeeri
The Pakistani dictatorship is neither weak nor dying, nor is its occupation of Sindh going to be over soon. The Punjabi Urdu oligarchy has been in power without interruption for over 50 years. That is why the military budget is about $4 billion and the Sindh education budget has been about 1% of that amount for decades (ignoring the increase due to the US pumping which have doubled this amount). In a normal country, the education budget is more than twice the military budget (which would require an over 100 time or 10,000% increase in the education budget).
ReplyDeleteDifferent thugs and facilitators have been the face of the military. If people get tired of Gen. Musharraf, the powers will find a new face for another while. As a US official observed, why bother using up capital to support a civilian politician, the military will still be in control and have to be dealt with.
The oligarchy gets its support from the mentality of the Punjabi and Muhajir masses and their militant, pro-war attitudes. That is the reason politicians have talked about awfully cruel things like 1000 years war , supported unneeded nuclear weapons, all the while as the people are suffering from malnutrition and disease, illiteracy and unclean water throughout Sindh. There has never been democracy, only a sham for Sindhis and Baloch. Our peace-loving people do not choose to have their oil and gas, their ports, their lands, used to promote an alien military suffering from megalomania.
Our struggle has to start with Sindhi values, not those who would sell Sindh for a pittance.
jiie Sindh,
Gul Agha
